Surfrider Tasmania aims to inspire and engage Tassie's surfing and coastal communities to protect our oceans.
We formed in 2021 in response to the increasing industrialisation threatening our coasts and surf breaks and are dedicated to raising awareness and engaging our community to advocate for the sustainable management and use of coastal areas.
In recent years, we have witnessed significant changes to ocean ecosystems across the state. Along Tasmania's east coast, climate change has resulted in the loss of 95% of our ancient giant kelp forests. Serious pollution from salmon farms in Macquarie Harbour on the west coast has created 'dead zones'. Fishing folk have reported huge reductions in fish and invertebrate stocks from the impacts of seismic blasting. In 2020, Tasmania experienced the largest whale stranding in Australia’s history, with over 400 Pilot Whales found beached.
As an island state, we have a diverse community of surfers, fishing folk, divers, explorers and beachcombers. Surfrider Tasmania is an inclusive group committed to bringing these communities together to positively impact our oceans and protect marine life. Today, we are saying enough is enough.
We are currently an active partner in the 'Save The Southern Sea' campaign, aiming to prevent seismic blasting and fossil fuel exploration of the ocean between Tasmania and Victoria.
