Surfrider Surf Coast was formed in 1996 to protest sewage outfalls at Black Rock (13th Beach) and Lorne on the Great Ocean Road. Our early work also included major revegetation projects and regular beach cleans along the Surf Coast.
We are an active partner in the 'Save The Southern Sea' campaign, which aims to stop offshore fossil fuel exploration along the Victorian coastline. In March 2024, we paddled out alongside thousands of surfers, swimmers and ocean lovers to show our opposition to these plans. We were also part of previous movements to prevent offshore fossil fuel exploration, including the successful 'Fight For The Bight' campaign.
We have long worked to protect coastal and marine areas from overdevelopment and environmental damage caused by surging tourist numbers. We were an active member of the Bells Beach Surfing Reserve Advisory Committee from 1999-2010. Key campaigns included supporting the Bells Beach 'Respect Stones' program and preventing the planned construction of a massive boardwalk at Winki Pop.
Surfrider Surf Coast continues to advocate for the protection and preservation of Bells Beach as a place of environmental and cultural significance for surfers. In 2012 we launched the petition: “Love Bells Beach” alongside SANE, BBPS and members of Torquay Boardriders Club - collecting over 2,600 signatures. We continue to collaborate with local community groups on our shared vision for the “Bells Beach Surfing Sanctuary”.
Our recent work also includes campaigning for the RAMSAR listing of the Karaaf Wetlands (located between Torquay and Point Impossible) and improved management of stormwater entering the wetlands.
Local meetings are held on Wednesday evenings in Torquay. If you would be like to attend or get involved in our branch campaigns, please contact us at surfcoast@surfrider.org.au
