In the 1990s, Cronulla was home to some of Sydney’s most polluted beaches.
Surfers were sick of swimming in filth pouring out of the cliff-face sewage outfall at Potter Point, near Boat Harbour, and demanded action. In 1995, more than 1000 placard-waving protesters marched behind a makeshift coffin to call for change.
The protests were a success and upgrades to the sewage treatment process were made, which have greatly improved water quality in the area.
