Activist Spotlight: Meet Richie 'Vas' Vaculik, Mixed Martial Artist, Surfer and Surfrider Ambassador
With the recent launch of the Ambassadors Program, we are excited to introduce you to the mixed martial artist and big wave surfer, Richie 'Vas' Vaculik.
What are your major accomplishments and career highlights?
Sporting wise, I have to say being a part of last years Red Bull Cape Fear event was a huge highlight and to also be the first Australian flyweight fighter to be signed be the UFC is something I'm pretty proud of. My book that was released last year meant a lot to me too, but what trumps all of this was the arrival of my beautiful daughter, Grace Lily Vaculik only a few days ago!
What will you do in 2017 to make a positive impact?
I will keep working with youth through the PCYC as a part of the 'back on track' program which introduced them to martial arts and helps cultivate more positive attitude and confidence in some kids lacking a bit of direction and finding themselves in a bit of trouble. I would love to bring more awareness to environmental issues also, especially ones involving the ocean.
What does the ocean mean to you and why should it be protected?
I've always loved being in and around the ocean from as early as I can remember. It's something that feeds into every one of my emotions and something that I can never be too far away from. It should be protected for so many reasons. It plays such a huge roll in keeping our planet healthy and is such a vital provider for so many communities around the globe.
The most amazing place I've travelled to is…
Any one of the beautiful pacific islands are always amazing to visit especially if you love the ocean and what they have to offer with surfing, diving, fishing or chilling.
Why do you think people should get involved with Surfrider?
If you love the beach and the ocean, getting involved with Surfrider is a great way to give a little bit back and help ensure its healthy future and so generations to come can enjoy it too.
