| On
Tuesday 29th September a collective of environmental groups
and surfers will place a large 6 x 10 metre banner on the
cliff face at world renowned surfing location BELLS BEACH
to protest against the JABILUKA URANIUM MINE. The banner featuring
the words 'SURFERS FOR SACRED SITES' and 'NOT JABILUKA, NOT
ANYWHERE' was painted by members from local coastal environmental
groups including Surfers Appreciating the Natural Environment
(S.A.N.E.), the Surfrider Foundation and local Coast Action
groups with support from the local surf industry.
Representatives from local surfing and environmental
groups demand that the Howard Government halt development
at Jabiluka because: the mine has been developed without adequate
consultation with the traditional custodians of Kakadu (Mirrar
people), uranium mining has the potential to poison the air
and water around Kakadu and impact on the health of site workers,
the Jabiluka project sets a national precedent for environmental
vandalism in other protected areas (Bells Beach), developing
uranium mines does nothing to encourage the development of
alternative, environmentally friendly sources of energy.
The
SURFERS FOR SACRED SITES banner will be unfurled on the cliffs
at BELLS BEACH at 10:00am on TUESDAY 29th SEPTEMBER and will
be accompanied by a surfboard paddle out and beach demonstrations.
All members of the media are welcome to attend.
