Invitation
to the Media and Public
by
Greg Howell Executive Director
Surfrider Foundation January 2000 |
Surfrider Foundation,
Coastcare and Gold Coast City Council would like to invite
you to the launch of the "Saltwater Creek Bluewater Taskforce"
at 10am on Wednesday 2nd February 2000. The launch will be
held at the "Veterans of South East Asia Wars Park"
Currumbin Creek Road, eastern side of Currumbin RSL.
Mr Greg Howell, Project Co-ordinator,
said "Surfrider Foundation is concerned over the present
condition of water quality in Saltwater Creek. In order to
address these concerns a water quality-monitoring program
will be undertaken with participation from interested community
members. Erosion of the creek banks has been identified. Information
and assistance is sought to re-vegetate the area and to provide
historical information on the vegetative and recreational
use of the creek. Any photographic evidence relating to Saltwater
Creek would be greatly appreciated."
"It will be a wonderful
start to the project with the planting of mangroves, banksias
and pandanus trees and we are really looking forward to meeting
all the local residents keen to help out. The main idea behind
this project is to instil an old fashioned feeling within
the local community to protect and care for their back yard.
Surfrider hopes to eventually leave the responsibility to
the local community once a catchment management group has
been organised." said Mr Howell.
Parliamentary Member Margaret
May, Mayor Gary Baildon, Coastcare representative Mick Cubis,
Councillors Sue Robbins and Daphne McDonald and GCCC officers
have been invited to attend. Morning tea will be provided.
We hope you can attend and show your support for this valuable
community project.
