Cabarita Beach Clean Up: 29th June 2003

The Surfrider Foundation held a successful beach clean up at Cabarita on Sunday 29th June 2003.

A social and interactive day holds opportunity to develop the Tweed Coast Branch in the near future.

Surfrider spokesperson Gill Araujo started the day with a comment that the beach appeared to be reasonably clean.

He was corrected, when the group had collected a sizable amount of rubbish by mid morning.

Surfrider resident artist, Bob Mac, assembled some of the rubbish into a sculpture.

Cabarita Lyons assisted in providing lunch to the hungry volunteers. This was accompanied with an acoustic Jam which used some of the rubbish to create "audible Junk".

Enthusiasm and commitment of visitors was noted as passers by joined in the fun. One Japanese man picking up rubbish on crutches was a stand out.

Bottles, cans, plastics, and cigarette butts formed the bulk of rubbish collected with a car tyre thrown in the heap for good luck.

Surfrider advises the next local project will be the donation and hand over of a beach wheelchair to Surf Life Saving on the Gold Coast. This is part of our 'beach access to everyone' project as part of the Respect the Beach Program.
