Welcome
(1) Welcome to Gath Sports.
(2) Welcome our new Company Secretary Julie Kereszteny.
Julie is completing an environmental science degree at Griffith
University Qld and will be a wonderful asset to us. Leaving

for their valuable work and wish them all the very best for
the future.
(3) We would like to officially welcome four Beach
Spokespersons (Beach Spokespersons are individuals who do
the work of a Branch). These guys have been representing Surfrider
for many years but now they are official. Congratulations
to Ken Rouw of Margaret River Region, Ken Dovers
of Sapphire/Moonee Beach, David Pratt of Kalbarri Beach
and Paul Carey of Streaky Bay.
Goodbyes
(1) We at national office were extremely saddened to
hear of the untimely passing of a surfing icon in Chris
Bystrom recently. Chris was a supporter of Surfrider for
many years and a well liked character to us all.
(2) Epitaph to John Fisher. John was a quiet
but determined surfing activist. He was a Surfrider Foundation
Committee Member and along with myself, led the successful
5 year campaign to upgrade the Warriewood Sewage Treatment
Plant which had been dumping sewage onto the open northern
beaches where John loved to surf. Because of his efforts those
who surf, swim or sit on Mona Vale Headland now look out onto
cleaner beaches. John Fisher also served on Councils Ingleside
Warriewood Land Release Committee for about 4 years until
eventually the Council and community together succeeded in
curtailing that disastrously huge land release. To honour
John the Sydney Northern Beaches Branch of Surfrider Foundation
have mounted a plaque in a chair overlooking Mona Vale with
the words "John Fisher (1958 -2001) A Local Surfer who
Fought for Clean Beaches". John was a great mate, though
hard to wake up for the early, he loved to take off on the
big ones, didn't drop in on others and was always great fun
to be with. I will greatly miss him, as will many others.
Thanks

(22) The office was contacted by ABC Radio Northern
NSW after a press release from the good people at the Nature
Conservation Council which discussed the need for research
to find out what levels of compounds and chemicals in materials
such as contraceptive pills, hormone treatments and antibiotics
are passing into the marine environment off the Mid North
Coast. This is a good call by the Nature Conservation Council
and we are right behind them on this campaign. It is a huge
issue overseas and we need to increase awareness of this relatively
unknown form of pollution. Thanks NCC.
Media
(1)
Rehame Newslines
is a media clipping service from Brisbane who approached us
after recent media release from national office. Owen

This is an amazing service and I would have to recommend it
to any company that needs to track media to survive and keep
up to date.

Sunday, 28 October 2001 - Marnie interviews Michael Legg-Wilkinson
(ph.sp.), Surfrider Foundation, Neil Lazarow (ph.sp.),
Surf Eastern Beaches and Will Jones, Marine Discovery
Centre, about the Surfrider Foundation's annual conference
being held at Bondi this weekend. Lazarow agrees that beaches
"are cleaner than they have been" for a very long
time, which he attributes to NSW Government action in moving
sewage further out to sea. Jones agrees problems "have
moved offshore" although "it's the era of hope now".
Wilkinson comments on development in Surfers where he lives,
saying the impact on marine life is nothing like it is in
Sydney.

and hastily-built testimonies to poor planning, lack of community
consultation and disregard for the environment. Surfrider
Foundation urges that DUAP swiftly and completely reject the
South West Rocks Aquaculture Ltd Proposal. Thanks to the crew

like to arrange all these items before the AGM so on the day
