Part of the money has been used to buy clothes
and other daily necessities for a group of 22
orphans from the village of Mon Ikeun, which was
almost totally destroyed by the 2004 Boxing Day
tsunami.
One of these lads, Surya, was among the best of
local surfers. He lost pretty much everything
on the day of the disaster including his family.
Lhoknga Aid hopes to organise a surfboard for
him to help him return to the water and the joy
of surfing.
David Lines and his wife Norma have been key organisers
in the distribution of the goods to these women
and children.

The remaining money has been used
to re-build the livelihoods of some of those in
the village whose businesses were destroyed by
the tsunami.
While many of the homes in the village have now
been rebuilt by various non-government organisations
(NGOs), small businesses can not find the capital
to rebuild.
Local business people Lhoknga Aid has assisted
to date include; Ibu Desawti who sold Nasi Goreng
to locals and surfers alike; Rusli who cooked
the best fried noodles on the west coast; Pak
Azair who cooked omelettes in Jakob's stall in
the market; Pak Ubit a local fisherman and Ibrahim,
a transport entrepreneur.
The final distribution of the initial effort
was made on 6 June 2006 to help Yusnidar and Darlian
rebuild their two losmen which where home to many
surfers during the 20 years they were operating
before the tsunami.
Every surfer needs a bed and a good feed and
these businesses are the key to encouraging tourists
back to Lhoknga.
These businesses will also provide long term
economic stimulus in the village and good jobs
for locals.
The principals of Lhoknga Aid would like to thank
Surfrider Foundation Australia for their support
in allowing us to help the people of Lhoknga in
their time of need. We would also like to thank
all those that have given so generously.
