Surf
to Save Kirra Contest Photo Gallery
Contest organiser John Bradford teamed up
with the Kirra Surfriders Club and Surfrider
Foundation Australia on Saturday the 16th of
February 2008 to hold a surfing event in aid
of the 'Bring Back Kirra' campaign.
Special thanks to Peter Turner and Kirra Surf,
Stomp surf wax and Surfrider Foundation for
providing prizes. Lunch was provided by Kirra
Pizza Hut.
Wayne 'Rabbit' Bartholomew, Cheyne Horan, Stuart
Ball, John Bradford and Neil Lazarow spoke at
the presentation on topics including the need
for recognition of surfing amenity, the economic
value of surfing, the iconic nature of Kirra
and the generation/s who have missed it.
Hopefully the event won't be required annually.
Maybe one day all the crew can get together
and have a 'Surf to Enjoy Kirra' back at the
point.

Jack Johnson
Listen:
"Sleep through the static"
Jack
Johnson partners with Surfrider Foundation for
2008 World Tour.
Surfrider Foundation has had an educational
booth at every concert of the Australia/New
Zealand leg of Jack Johnson's World Tour, in
support of Johnson's worldwide #1 record, Sleep
Through the Static.
As part of each concert's interactive Village
Green, Surfrider Foundation partnered with Johnson
to kick off Surfrider Foundation's new Rise
Above Plastics campaign and promoting the
need to reduce the use of plastics and protect
and preserve the world's oceans.
In addition, Surfrider Foundation Australia
asked concert-goers to sign a pledge demanding
an end to the "pulp fiction" surrounding the
Tasmanian pulp mill controversy.

"Being the son of a famous
surfer in the islands, Jeff Johnson, Jack Johnson
naturally had an interest in surfing. He began
surfing at the age of ten and by the time he
was seventeen he made the finals at the Pipe
trial and became the youngest invitee ever do
so. Unfortunately, Jack suffered a surfing accident
when he was seventeen. While recovering from
the accident, he started taking up an interest
in music." Read

Catherine Hill Bay (NSW): Concept Plan Rejected
The Independent Hearing and Assessment Panel
final report on the Rose Group's second concept
plan has been released. Read
why the panel rejected Rose's second concept
plan.
This development proposal will have severe impacts
on the village of Middle Camp. The proposal
entails building houses to the north, south,
east and west of the village and, as such, will
be highly visually intrusive. 300 new houses
on top of the existing 54 will smother the heritage
village.

Remote Marine Wilderness Debris Cleanup - SW Tasmania
In
1999 Surfrider Foundation began a campaign to
address the massive problem of marine debris
washing onto Tasmanian shorelines. Apart from
causing unsightly pollution on our beaches,
marine debris causes the cruel death of uncounted
numbers of marine mammals, birds, and fish species.
Surfrider Foundation Australia
has now conducted 6 clean ups on the beaches
and rocky shorelines in the South West Wilderness
World Heritage Area... Find

CAMPAIGN
Tasmanian Pulp Mill
The Surfrider position is that,
by allowing Gunns to construct their $1.7 billion
mill before the required scientific work is complete,
a dangerous game is being played with Tasmania's
beaches, surf-breaks, and coastal environment.

Dr. Moore's speech from a 2007 meeting at
Bondi Beach...
The following is quoted from
the CoastView web site:
"SFA is not opposed to downstream processing of forest products in Tasmania but maintains we must be absolutely sure that any development is benign to the environment, other industries, coastal amenity, and indeed human health."...
"Surfrider advocates for the sustainable management and use of the coastal
zone, including coastal river catchments and
offshore activities. Our opportunities to enjoy
the coast: its clean water, its biodiversity
and its spectacular landforms, are influenced
by the actions of individuals, the aspirations
of business, and the policies of all levels
of government.
Surfrider aims to increase awareness of many
issues impacting on our enjoyment of the coast,
and to ensure that our children have similar
opportunities to enjoy it as we have today.
Surfrider is part of a larger, international
Pacific Rim Pulp Mill Coalition, advocating
responsible and effective coastal environmental
management standards from pulp mill operators."...

"Every dollar you spend is a vote."
Sandy Shore.
Surfrider Foundation Australia encourages all
surfriders to make their vote count.
One aim was to elect the correct people to
conserve and sustain our coasts. Now it's
time to follow up on any promises that politicians
made.
An example of letting politicians know: Surfriders meet with Peter Garrett (75kb)
