Voluntary Phase Out of Microbeads

Microbeads are tiny bits of plastic that are present in many facial cleansers, toiletries, and cosmetics. These wreak havoc on marine life as they ultimately end up in the ocean and become part of the food chain. Environment Minister, Greg Hunt, has threatened to introduce a law to ban microbeads if companies do not adhere to a voluntary phase-out.

Submissions Needed – Marine Debris Threat Abatement Plan

An opportunity has arisen to contribute towards ongoing government policy and action in relation to the parlous state of marine debris, especially plastic debris, and its disastrous impact on sea life above and below the water. The Threat Abatement Plan for the Impacts of Marine Debris on Vertebrate Marine Species is being revised. The Department of Environment has released the draft Threat Abatement Plan for the Impacts of Marine Debris on Vertebrate Marine Species (2017) for public comment.

Plastics Pollution is Reaching the Most Remote Parts of the Ocean

In June 2016, CSIRO, Tangaroa Blue and Bush Blitz, along with Surfrider and other environmental organisations, embarked on a 12-day journey to tackle marine debris and to collect research on the species that inhabit the Coral Sea Commonwealth Marine Reserve. In just 12 days, over 2.2 tonnes of rubbish was removed from the remote islands of the Great Coral Sea.
