Cattle Grids Revegetation Project – Saturday 16th July 11am

July 5, 2011 by

Save the Date- it’s time for some more Surfrider Foundation Tasmania winter activity!

Where: “Cattle Grids Headland”, 4 Mile Beach (just south of Falmouth from the St Mary’s pass turnoff). Meet at the carpark.

When: 11.00am Saturday 16th July (Members are encouraged to stay for saturday evening/sunday for other events).

Why: “Cattle Grids” is one of the better known and loved left hand point breaks on the East Coast of Tassie, so much so that several years ago a group of local sufers and community members embarked upon an ambitious project to landscape and revegetate the “Grid” headland, at the North end of 4 Mile Beach. A six figure sum of money was granted for stone work, inluding steps, paths, sculptures and storm refuges with seats and viewing platforms of the wave.

Much of this work has been overgrown by coastal scrub, and use of parts of the lanscaped project area (for example inappropriate vehicle access) has led to degradation on parts of the headland.

The original Cattle Grid project is a positve symbol for all Surfers around the state, and is an initiative that we should all be proud of and recognise.

We all love the surf and our beaches, but be honest……how much do we ever give back and contribute to our states “surf sanctuaries”?

If you would like to contribute to the care and maintenance of this area and are willing to join Surfrider Tasmania in this project, please register your interest via return e-mail, by accessing the Surfrider Tasmania Facebook Site or contacting Peter Whish-Wilson on 0410 754 728.

This is meant to be a social gathering for surfers and other community members. Camping and other accomodation, a BBQ and surf competition are also being planned for Surfrider members if surf conditions and weather permit (including on the sunday 17th July).

Once again please e-mail me prior to the 16th of July to register your interest so we can organise the logistics for the day.

Hands Across the Sand

May 22, 2011 by

Hands Across the Sand is an international grassroots event that brings people together to oppose new offshore oil drilling and promote a clean energy future that will help end our dependence on fossil fuels. Surfrider Foundation is an official sponsor and the event is a cornerstone of our Not the Answer campaign opposing offshore drilling. Last year we were thrilled to have 100,000 people participate around the world.

The premise of the event is very simple: on June 25 at 12pm local time people will join hands for 15 minutes on beaches around the world to champion clean energy solutions to our filthy fuels problem. All events are organized locally by volunteers and the event website provides most of the resources that you will need.

For more information, to find a group near you or to organise your own group please register here…

Save Cathos – Protest Rally Saturday 5th Feb 10am

February 3, 2011 by

Catherine Hill Bay is facing massive development threats.

A protest rally and paddle out was held at Catherine Hill Bay on Saturday 5th February 2011, attracting over 500 surfers and community members in protest of the Cathos proposed Development.

Catherine Hill Bay Progress Association organised the peaceful protest on Catherine Hill Bay Beach, and the Channel 7 helicopter filmed the event.

From Channel 7 News:

PLEASE HELP US SAVE CATHO

Developers want the State Govt to approve about 900 new houses at Catho . There are only 110 old miners cottages now & this proposed development will ruin the only truly coastal mining village on the coast.

Catho has been enjoyed by the people of the Hunter, Central Coast & Sydney for 100yrs as a beautiful peaceful destination for a surf, day on the beach or walk. Bikers enjoy the ride up the coast & stop to have a beer & a feed at the Catho Pub. This is the last chance to let the State Government know that they should leave Catho alone.

For further information on how to Save Catho please contact Sue Whyte on (02) 4976 2310 or 0409 344 253 or suewhyte.1980@bigpond.com

Screening “State of Siege” – 16th February 2011

A documentary explaining how the misuse of the Part 3A legislation has had a dramatic impact on many communities; including Catherine Hill Bay, will be screened at the Roseville Cinema on the 16th Feburary, at 6:30pm. It includes an extensive interview with our wonderful patron Jack Mundey so if you can make this screening it will be an informative and enjoyable evening

About Cathos

Catherine Hill Bay is unique in New South Wales. A coastal village of about 100 houses it is located approximately 100km north of Sydney on the Wallarah Peninsula, which lies between Lake Macquarie and the Pacific Ocean.

The village – two tiny settlements about 1km apart – consists mostly of modest timber miners’ cottages, some dating from the 19th Century and remnant infrastructure from almost 140 years of underground coal mining, set in a dramatic natural landscape of bush and heath beside the Pacific Ocean.

Almost 100 years ago it was described as “favoured by its excellent situation (and) for those in need of change and rest, or in search of health, a more ideal spot would be hard to find.”

Today the Bay remains beautiful and welcoming, yet its heritage as a company coal mining town includes hardship and a long struggle to maintain its distinctive community identity, most recently in the face of large scale coastal development which would destroy for ever the unique character and environment of this special place.

Catherine Hill Bay History

Catherine Hill Bay heritage village and its bush and heathland location beside a 2km long beach were protected by Lake Macquarie City Council in 2004 as a Heritage Conservation Area (HCA). The village comprises the oldest group of buildings in Lake Macquarie City and its natural environment is largely unchanged since before Captain Cook sailed past.

The area’s distinctive natural and built features have been acknowledged since 1969 as having a significance worth protecting, and the cessation of coal mining in 2002 accelerated moves to further protect and preserve its unique characteristics.

In 2005 the Catherine Hill Bay Progress Association nominated the HCA for listing on the State Heritage Register, the highest level of heritage protection available in NSW.

The NSW Heritage Office assessing this nomination lapsed in late 2006 when the NSW Planning Minister, Mr Sartor, cleared the way for large scale development of the “Bay”.

However the Heritage Office has already decided to include on the State Heritage Register the remnant WW11 RAAF Radar Station No 208, built in bush adjacent to one of the Bay’s earliest, now derelict, settlements, known as Mine Camp.

The Radar Station and the women who operated it feature in the Summer 2005/06 issue of “Heritage NSW”, the newsletter of the Heritage Office. (The Heritage Office website is www.heritage.nsw.gov.au and go to “Publications and Forms”. A free printed copy is available by emailing lianne.hall@heritage.nsw.gov.au .)

The story of the Radar Station was the theme of the Bay’s 2005 Heritage Festival (“How the Bay Helped to Win the War”), and is dealt with comprehensively in the Progress Association’s DVD “The Bay at War”.

The Progress Association has a commitment to preserve the heritage of the Bay and has initiated a number of projects involving extensive community involvement, including the annual “Back to the Bay” Heritage Festival and “Catho Classics” Film Festival.

Some seven feature films or TV episodes have been shot on location at the Bay and the “Catho Classics” Film Festival takes each year one of these productions and uses its story to illuminate part of the village’s history and community life, through a locally-produced DVD.

In 2004 Mel Gibson’s first starring movie ” Summer City ” served as the theme of a DVD which recorded residents’ experiences and memories of the shoot and its impact on the village. In 2005 a 12-minute 1942 Charles Chauvel “classic” called “Power to Win” (about war-time coal mining underground) and a 1996 episode of the UK TV series “Soldier Soldier” presented an opportunity for the DVD team to examine “The Bay at War” during World War 11.

Click Back to the Bay 2004 and Back to the Bay 2005 for more details. Copies of the DVDs are available from Sue Whyte on (02) 4976 2310.

The 2007 “Back to the Bay” Heritage Festival is the 140 th anniversary of the shipwreck of the “Catherine Hill”, after which the Bay is named (click Our Past for the Bay’s history). The anniversary will be the theme of the 2007 Festival.
