Capricorn Coast is based in Yeppoon, bordering on the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. We are co-custodians (with council) of Australia's 2nd ever surfing reserve - The Big Dune Surfing Reserve - on Farnborough Beach. The reserve protects the patch of remnant beach scrub with the highest biocondition score along the Queensland Coast. Because of it's importance a number of community groups, NRM bodies and council work together to look after this special place. We fought against the over-the-top redevelopment of Great Keppel Is (lost March 2013). We are an important part of the Keppel Bay and Fitzroy Delta Alliance (KAFDA) campaigning against three massive coal ports proposed for Keppel Bay, 50 km south of us, with our air and water quality in the firing line, not to mention the impact on the Great Barrier Reef. We are stewards of the Reef and wish to protect our fickle surf breaks from human impact. John McGrath is the president of the Capricorn Coast branch and can be contacted on 0421 694 133 and capricorncoast@surfrider.org.au
