The Surfrider Foundation Surf Coast Branch will be holding a Beach Clean Up Day at the Bells Beach Surfing Reserve on Sunday 29th May at 11:00am (meet at bottom/hammerhead carpark).
The Surfrider Foundation regularly holds beach clean ups around the country to educate and inform and to educate members of the branch and the community about problems of beach litter at many of our beaches.
In 1996 the Surfrider Foundation identified beach litter as a major problem on our beaches through its national Human Impacts of Australian Beaches survey.
Of the 1,612 beaches around Australia surveyed a massive 80% had litter from the following categories: food wrapper, plastic bags, cans and cigarette butts.
Almost ten years later and not much has changed with beach litter still a major problem on a significant number of Australiašs beaches.
Worse it would appear that in many cases surfers can be the worst offenders as evidenced by the number of wax containers, broken legropes and other surf related litter that is found at popular surf breaks like Bells Beach.
The Surfrider Foundation invites everyone who cares for the coast to come along and get involved. Gloves and bags will be provided.
Further beach clean ups will be held along the Surf Coast during the next few months.
